Today's quiet neighborhoods and tree-lined streets tell only part of Nicoma Park's story. The community has one of the most unique histories in the Oklahoma City metro.
A Town Built Around Chickens
Nicoma Park began in the late 1920s as an ambitious agricultural community designed specifically as a poultry colony. Developer Gilbert A. Nichols envisioned a planned community where families could purchase homes and support themselves by raising chickens and producing eggs. The project quickly attracted families from Oklahoma and across the Midwest who were searching for a new opportunity and a better life.
By 1929, approximately one hundred families were living in the community, collectively raising nearly 50,000 chickens. Residents worked together through the Nicoma Park Egg Marketing Association, processing and shipping eggs throughout the country. At its height, Nicoma Park was considered one of the largest poultry colonies east of the Rocky Mountains.
The Meaning Behind the Name
The name "Nicoma" was created by combining the first three letters of developer Gilbert A. Nichols' last name with the last three letters of Oklahoma. More than 200 names were submitted during a community naming contest before "Nicoma Park" was selected.
Hard Times and Resilience
Unfortunately, the community faced significant challenges during the early 1930s. A disease outbreak among the poultry flocks devastated the local chicken industry, and the onset of the Great Depression further damaged the community's economy. Although the original poultry cooperative eventually failed, many residents remained and continued building lives in Nicoma Park. Their determination and resilience helped shape the character of the town that still exists today.
Growth Into a Modern Community
As eastern Oklahoma County continued to develop, Nicoma Park gradually evolved from an agricultural colony into a residential community.
